Preparing for the Global Stage: An Interview with Head Italian Delegate Alayna Hahn

As the highly anticipated Model United Nations of the Far West (MUNFW) 74th Session approaches, the Italian delegation is in the final stages of preparation. The Italian delegates represent a nation with a rich history and strong global diplomatic presence. Currently, the delegates are refining negotiation strategies, engaging in mock sessions, and meticulously researching policy stances, all to ensure a strong presence at the conference. Head Italian delegate, Alayna Hahn, a junior Business Administration and Political Science major at Heidelberg University, shares, “I am very excited for the opportunity to grow as a scholar.” She continues, “This conference is giving me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and participate in a simulation of an organization that plays a critical role in international politics.”

As a first-year participant in MUNFW with no prior conference experience, Hahn reflects, “No matter how much preparation, I believe this will be a learning experience.” Like Hahn, many members of the Italian delegation are first-time participants in the MUNFW conference. Hahn, with the guidance of Dr. Marc O’Reilly, has worked tirelessly to prepare the Italian delegation for the conference, addressing potential challenges and how to overcome them. Hahn adds, “Preparation has been a tedious process at some points, but I think the Italian delegation has done well at researching and understanding the key information to be successful.” She continues, “From draft resolutions to policy statements and even negotiation research, I believe that our delegation has worked hard to become knowledgeable.” Italy is recognized as a prominent European power and a key player within the United Nations, maintaining firm stances on immigration while adopting more collaborative approaches to humanitarian issues. Hahn expresses, “My main goal is to be as active as a participant as possible.” She goes on to say, “I would like for both myself and the delegation to be active in participating and speaking out to voice Italy’s opinion.”

The biggest challenge for Hahn and the Italian delegation at the conference will be overcoming their own self-doubt. Hahn acknowledges, “I anticipate some stage fright and uncertainty, but there is nothing that we can’t work through as a delegation.” Above all, the Italian delegation is proud of the work they have accomplished this semester and takes pride in representing Heidelberg at the 74th Session of MUNFW.
