Voices Behind the Podium: Who Inspires MUN Delegates

As new leaders and diplomats are shaped through Model UN, we asked delegates to reflect on the individuals who have shaped them. Who are the role models that helped inspire the voices we see at the 74th Far West Model United Nations Conference?

The answers, as expected, were as diverse as the delegates themselves.

When asked who she looks up to, Ms. Miriam Greene from Weber State University named Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She cited Ginsburg’s famous quote: “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. It shouldn’t be that women are the exception.” In explaining the quote’s relevance, Ms. Greene said, “I am well aware that not everyone is listened to—whether it’s racial minorities, people with disabilities, women, or others. We have to take a step back and give a voice to everyone who can’t stand up for themselves.”

While Ms. Greene looked to a global icon, other delegates named personal figures from their own lives. Ms. Shannon Petrulis of Heidelberg University highlighted her sister as her greatest role model. “She has been through so much,” Petrulis said, “and even then, she’s really smart and strong. Despite everything, she’s very inspiring.” Similarly, Ms. Roya Rashidi of San Jose State University named her mother, explaining, “My mom has always been a dominant, independent figure for me. She’s pushed me to choose paths in life that might not be the easiest—but I need that.”

One of the more unexpected but compelling answers came from Mr. Prabhakaran Pillai of American River College, who named “the everyday farmer” as his role model. When asked to elaborate, he said, “While researching my country, Nepal, I saw how many of our industries are based on agriculture. I really want to highlight the hard work and sacrifices of those laborers. They inspire me to work hard and appreciate everything the working class contributes.”

Finally, when asked the same question, President Piper Guinn named Dr. Michael McBride. “He’s been diligently serving Widener College for 56 years—which is more than most people stick with anything,” she said. “Every day, it reminds me to persevere through hard times. When you dedicate yourself to something you love, it really shows.”

From Supreme Court justices to sisters, farmers to professors, the delegates of MUNFW are shaped by role models both near and far—proving that leadership often begins with inspiration.
