Ireland’s Opening Plenary Speech
Ireland begins their speech by recognizing the heroic acts of the healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic along with the work of scientists and the sacrifices made by ordinary citizens. As the world begins to recover from the pandemic, Ireland looks to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to protect the planet and “ensure a fair and inclusive future.” Ireland continues in its speech by acknowledging the negative impacts that have come from the COVID-19 pandemic, including a rise in poverty and the inaccessibility of education for students. They also acknowledge that climate change still remains an “existential threat” and that the fight for equality for women and girls still continues. Ireland notes the accomplishments that they have made from the support of Ireland’s Rapid Response Corps to UN crisis operations to joining the Paris Agreement and promoting clean energy. Ireland calls for coordinated and collaborative efforts in the international community in order to fulfill the promise of leaving no one behind. They end their speech with an old Irish proverb, “The future is not set, there is no fate but what we make for ourselves.”
